The Pleasure of Not Meeting Rahm Emanuel

Today Friday June 29, 2012 I had the pleasure of not meeting Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

He was scheduled to give a press conference at 1871. The office space where a typical day goes like this:

I run into people from 37signals…yeah those that make Basecamp. I run into people that make your Groupons and other folks that have built amazing stuff.

I saw once Illinois’ Governor Pat Quinn. Best day of my life. I wanted to shake his hand but his entourage of bodyguards gave me the face of “I will kick your hispanic butt to the ground a-hole”

So I thought. Today will be the best day of my life. I will meet the guy that makes our city run. The guy that turns the light on and off and make sure our trains run on time.

11:30am. I see his entourage coming into the office. Everybody’s talking about him.

I check my calendar and I see a conflict on my schedule. I am supposed to go to 8th Light. A famous software development shop in Chicago. They have something called 8th Light University where they give talks about software development.

Oh man. I am going to miss that talk. And Cory Foy is talking about “Design Patterns”. Not sure what that is about but it sounds interesting. I went to his talk a week ago at TechWeek and he is an awesome speaker.

Is Rahm Emanuel an awesome speaker?

I don’t know. I never been at one of his talks.

11:45am. Rahm Emanuel is walking around 1871. Oh yeah baby.

11:50. I jumped in a taxi to 8th Light and see Cory Foy in action once more.

So long Mayor. It was not worth it.
